Emotional Connections

Shaping human behaviour through design

Design not only shapes the spaces we use every day, but also our experience within them by impacting our behaviour and increasing the ability to connect to others. This story focuses on the importance of the emotional connections a space can facilitate and the positive outcomes it can have. Through anecdotes, quotes and first-hand memories, we look back on some of Universal’s projects. Illustrations by Marta Leon Ferreiro.

"Ace London you were so full of love, laughter and incredible people; I made friends for life here, forever in my heart and London's."

“Art on a plate - a truly unforgettable experience. Beautiful ambience with excellent service, every single dish is simply visually stunning."

“Great evening surrounded by brilliant people." Wai Shin Lin, co-CEO at Dezeen

“A home in Copenhagen. Fantastic room and cosy atmosphere, when opening doors could feel a warm welcome."

Shaping human behaviour through design

In reshaping how we design spaces, it intrinsically impacts our behaviour within them. From convivial spaces to hospitable configurations and furniture that brings people together, the magic of design lies in results that foster connection. And, in their creation, details matter. Be it the shape, dimension or placement of a piece within a space, it directly alters how users interact with it and how unique opportunities to connect might arise in unexpected ways.

Our emotional connections to a space stem from our interactions within it, ultimately shaping the memory that we are left with. So, in creating spaces from this experiential standpoint, it allows us to think beyond function and form and contemplate opportunities for connection that might not be initial considerations but, in time, will form the fundamental basis of why people return. Because, in creating a space that seamlessly brings us together to spark promising connections, it strengthens the wider community, and its impact goes far beyond the walls within which it is placed. As one couple commented after visiting Fortnum & Mason in The Royal Exchange, “An absolutely beautiful place, so peaceful and calm and the afternoon tea was delightful.”
