Poltrona Frau Showroom

Retaining the fabric of an industrial shell

A minimal furniture showroom in Clerkenwell

In 2009 we worked on furniture group Poltrona Frau’s first London showroom, located in a Grade II listed building at the heart of Clerkenwell. Spread over two floors in an ex-industrial building, we created a bright open space which accommodated a gallery, offices and meeting rooms.

Our design process began with the objective of retaining the fabric of the original industrial shell whilst opening up the two floors to create a usable basement space with daylight.

Cutting through the gallery space and constructed from 12mm thick steel plates, the sculptural staircase sits upon four staggered steel plinths, each of which extends out to create a display case running alongside the stairs for the display of furniture and lighting.
